Butane Gun
About
Spud guns have been around since the invention of potatoes. Film canister cannons have been around since the invention of film. This is some sort of hybrid between the two, with many optimizations. It is a small, breech-loading cannon with automatic fuel injection and ignition. It fires whatever fits in the barrel, and has interchangable barrels. I have to admit, it wasn't my idea, but I liked the idea so much that I had to try it and improve on it. SpecsBecause the specs of this gun are already detailed very well here, I will only explain the differences between the one I built and the one here. This gun has several improvements on the original. First, instead of having the gas + wires coming from the film canister cap, they go into the body. By "reversing" the film canister, the barrels can be shorter, lighter, and breech-loading, and the wires and gas tube are protected. It was more difficult to construct, but easier to operate. The film canister (combustion chamber) is sunk most of the way into the gun body for reinforcement. Second, the lighter is embedded into the handle and cannot be seen, except from the bottom. I removed the sparker and placed it as a trigger, and inserted a rod down from the top to release gas (see pictures). For refilling, the bottom of the lighter is exposed along with a small window to the fuel tank. The lighter came with a bright blue single-LED flashlight, and I couldn't waste it. So, I flipped it around so it is pointing up into the lighter instead of out. Adding another dowel to push the button, it now lights up the fuel tank so you can see clearly when you need a refill.
